His whole body is covered with a soft fur like the lion’s. He has whiskers and
possesses paws. He has beautiful erect ears and a fine curly tail. I find in
him an intelligent and loving companion and unfailing friend. He has often
impressed me more by his fidelity than his usefulness. Whenever I come back
home, be it night or day, morning or evening, he receives me at the door, falls
at my feet and wags his tails. My Dog serves me as an alert watchman as any
sentinel in a square.

Since The time he has been with us, not a single case of theft
has taken place in our street. Once Upon a time, a gang of dacoits, armed with
guns, fell upon our village. Jack, becoming aware of their approach, stealthily
came to my bed and awakened me with his paws. I readily inferred that there
must be something unusual. I armed myself with my gun and entered the
courtyard. My eyes fell on a party of men near the farther end of the street. I
at once fired a number of shots in quick succession. That frightened the
dacoits and they took to their heels.
Occasionally my father goes out hunting and Jack accompanies
him. He helps him to track the game and assists him much when he attacks a more
powerful animal. He is very clever and quick. He runs hither and thither, pokes
his nose into a bush, toils for a few minutes and then comes out with the game.
