India. They provide us with amusement and fun. They are generally found in
small town, villages and at fairs. In a big town like Calcutta we come across
very few jugglers. One reason is that there is not much open space in such
towns where a juggler can give his performance. Besides, there is much hurry
about everything and a great rush of traffic. The police don’t allow then to
show their feats and attract big crowds near the roads or crossings. People have
so many other attractions and means of recreation that they feel little interested
in the antiquated ways ad tricks of the jugglers. The educated people, in
particular, can’t afford to waste their time over it. They are more fond of
pictures, exhibitions, matches, and other ways of enjoyment.

A Juggler, however, is popular with women, children and old
men. They stand amazed at his wonderful tricks. They think him to be in a
possession of some magic. A Juggler wears a strange dress. He has a long loose
coat, a big turban, a dhoti and a
pair of old shoes. Often he has a big earring and some finger rings. He has a
funny appearance. He carries with a drum and a flute. He has with him a small
boy who also works as his assistant and carries about his dog or basket. The
bag contains the articles a juggler need for the show.
At first the juggler selects a suitable place for the
performance. He spreads a piece of cloth on the ground and begins to play on
the flute. The boy with him begins to beat the drum. The juggler is adept in
playing on the flute. He can produce different tunes to attract a significantly
large crowd of people before beginning his tricks. He is clever, witty and
quick of movements. All the time he is smiling and full of fun. He makes the
spectators with his timely jokes and witticism.

A juggler has man tricks to show. He generally begins with
the card tricks. He can correctly tell the card secretly pulled out of the pack
by a spectator. When people get interested in then he shows other feats of
wonder. His ball tricks are very surprising. He takes a number of balls and
throws them up in the air in quick succession. The ball keeps revolving in a
circle without any of them falling on the ground. This feat depends on the
dexterity of his hand and regular practice.
Sometimes the juggler asks a man to give him his ring. He covers
it with a piece of cloth and waves his magic-wand over it. When he removes the
cloth, the people are amazed to find that the ring has disappeared. The owner
is anxious to get back the ring. When the juggler sees that his patience is
exhausted, he asks some other person in the crowd to search his pockets. Much
to the surprise of all, the ring is found there and thus handed back to the
owner.
Often he covers a mango branch with cloth and makes it
sprout into a young tree in a trice. His basket trick is also very interesting.
He outs a big basket over his boy. He runs his dagger through it many times. The
people hear the boy shriek and cry. They see the sword covered with blood. They
think that the boy must be dead. But when he removes the basket, they see
nobody under it. The boy comes from somewhere in the crowd and is quite safe
and sound. The people shout and clap in praise of his this very trick.
By means of his wand the juggler can multiply the numbers of
currency notes and coins and can become rich for a small time. But again he is
the same poor man, wandering from place in search of bread. The juggler’s skill
requires cleverness and long practice. He earns a living by his dexterity and
skill.
